CONSTIPATION

CONSTIPATION:

Constipation occurs when bowel movements become less frequent and stools become difficult to pass. Constipation can have a serious negative effect on quality of life, as well as on physical and mental health

The bowel should move daily, ideally, after each meal, when this does not happen the toxins are reabsorbed by the system, placing an overload on the liver and kidneys. All  waste in the body should be expelled within 18-24 hours.

It happens most often due to changes in diet or routine, or due to inadequate intake of fiber. The stool is often hard and dry.  If you have constipation, food may move too slowly through the digestive tract. This gives the colon more time – too much time – to absorb water from the waste. The stool becomes dry, hard, and difficult to push out.

Pathway of food waste through colon, rectum and anus.

Common lifestyle causes of constipation include:

1. Eating foods low in fiber. This is because increasing fiber intake increases the bulk and consistency of bowel movements, making them easier to pass. It also helps them pass through the digestive system more quickly

There are many different dietary fibers, but in general, they fall into two categories: insoluble fibers and soluble fibers,  have different effects on digestion.

Sources of fiber include:

Soluble (absorb water and form a gel-like paste, which softens the stools and improves its consistency. )

  • fruit
  • oats
  • pulses, such as beans or lentils

Insoluble (add bulk to stools and may help them pass more quickly and easily through the digestive system.)

  • wholegrain pasta, bread, and cereal
  • skin of fruits and vegetables, such as potatoes or apples
  • brown rice/unpolished rice

2. Not drinking enough water. Being dehydrated regularly can make a person constipated. However, drinking carbonated drinks such as sugary soda is not a good idea, as these beverages can have harmful health effects and may make constipation worse

3. Not getting enough exercise, sedentary lifestyles with an increased risk of constipation.

4. Changes in your regular routine, such as traveling or eating or going to bed at different times.

5. Eating large amounts of milk or cheese, fast food / refine food products/ sugar/meat/diary products/ salt/refine food/sugary foods/highly processed foods

6. Stress.

7. Resisting the urge to have a bowel movement.

8. some modern medication like iron tablets, Anti nausea, anti depression, pain killer, hypertensive drugs, allergic etc.
