 FATTY LIVER  

Your liver is the second-largest organ (after the skin) in your body. It helps process nutrients from food and drinks, and filters harmful substances from your blood. 

The liver is located in the upper right-hand portion of the abdominal cavity. Shaped like a cone, the liver is a dark reddish-brown organ that weighs about 838 to 2584g.

The liver filters the blood and excretes much of that waste through the bile, which is sends into the gallbladder. When some oil/fat is in our meals it gives signals to gallbladder to contract and squeeze out some bile, which prepare body to absorbed the oil/fat 


FUNCTIONS:

  • Produces bile, which helps with digestion and excretion.
  • Makes proteins for the body.
  • Converts nutrients into energy.
  • Resist infections by making immune factors and removing bacteria and toxins 
  • Excretion of bilirubin, cholesterol, hormones, and drugs.
  • Metabolism of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates.
  • Enzyme activation.
  • Storage of glycogen, vitamins, and minerals (iron and copper)
  • Synthesis of plasma proteins, such as albumin, and clotting factors

Fatty liver:

Fatty liver disease is a common condition caused by the storage of extra fat in the liver. Having small amounts of fat in your liver is normal, but too much can become a health problem. but if the fat content is more than 10% of the liver’s weight, you might be suffering from a fatty liver

CAUSES:

1. Over eating- excellent way to ruin your liver, Just eat all you want and you will wear it out

2. Eating and drinking wrong things

3. Low protein diet, high carbohydrate, fried food and fat diet

4. Poisonous food- alcohol, caffeine, tobacco

5. Medicinal drugs- liver has to work overtime in order to try to excrete these dangerous chemicals

6. Insecticides and preservatives

7. Obesity 

8. High blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, or insulin         resistance  

9. Type 2 diabetes    

TYPES

There are two main types: 

A.  Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)

B.  Alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD).


  • SYMPTOMS:
  • Abdominal pain or a feeling of fullness in the upper right side of the abdomen (belly).
  • Nausea, loss of appetite or weight loss.
  • Yellowish skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice).
  • Swollen abdomen and legs (edema).
  • Extreme tiredness or mental confusion.
  • Weakness.

The major risk factors for NAFLD are:

NATURAL APPROACH

There are currently no drugs available to treat NAFLD. Diet and lifestyle and dietary changes are among the most effective ways to manage this condition.

* Food- focuses on a variety of plant-based foods and healthy fats. Fruits and vegetables, Legumes, whole grains, healthy fats like nuts, seeds, avocado, olive

Emphasize raw food in your diet- drink vegetable juice especially carrot and beet root etc.

Limit / avoid foods like

Sodium (salt)

Refined carbohydrates, such as sweets, white rice, white bread, or other refined grain products

Saturated fats, which are found in foods such red meat, full fat dairy, and fried foods

Trans fats, which are present in fried foods and many processed snack foods

Added sugars

* Target high cholesterol- NAFLD can make it harder for your     body to manage cholesterol on its own. This can worsen     NAFLD and increase your risk of heart disease.

* Try to Lose weight 

* Avoid known liver irritants- Certain substances can put excess stress on your liver. Some of these substances include alcohol, medications, and some vitamins and supplements.

* Take Herbs like -  turmeric, milk thistle, aloe vera, and green tea, ginseng, licorice,  Garlic. Ginger, amla, sugar cane juice

Lemon juice and liver are sweet hearts, lemon is the best friend that the liver has.
