POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN DISEASE (PCOD)
What are the main parts of the female reproductive system:
The female reproductive system includes the ovaries, Fallopian tubes, uterus, vagina, accessory glands, and external genital organs.
Ovary is an organ found in the female reproductive system that produces an ovum (egg). When released, this travels down the fallopian tube into the uterus, where it may become fertilized by a sperm (from male). There is an ovary (from Latin ovarium 'egg, nut') found on each side of the body.
Ovaries produces estrogen, progesterone and androgen.
Woman has two ovaries that release an egg (oocyte) alternately every month (single oocyte from one ovary is released during each menstrual cycle). The ovaries produce androgens or male hormones in minute quantities.
PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease, poly = numerous) is a condition where the ovaries release a lot of immature or partially-mature eggs which eventually turn into cysts. and also increase amount of androgen. (In women, ovary and adrenal gland produce androgens)
(In a fertile female, either the right or left ovary produces a mature egg for fertilization every month during ovulation)
SYMPTOMS:
Weight gain especial around the abdomen,
Irregular periods, No menstruation, heavy menstrual flow
Excess hair growth (excess facial and body hair)
Hair loss (male-pattern baldness)
Acne
Infertility,
Deep voice (Male voice)
Possible diagnostic criteria of PCOD
By some clinical expression
!. Hyperandrogenism (excess facial and body hair growth (hirsutism)
2. Ovulatory dysfunction (irregular or absent periods and difficulty becoming pregnant)
3. Cysts in ovaries.
CAUSATIVE FACTORS:
1. Fastest modern life style has to be blame
2. Pesticides in fruits and vegetables
3. Imbalance of hormones
4. Insulin resistance: Insulin resistance leads to an increase in insulin secretion (hyperinsulinemia), which is thought to stimulate ovarian androgen production.
5. Correlates Obesity: research study observed that an increasing rate of PCOS correlates with an increase in obesity and weight gain over the last ten years
FOUR TYPES OF PCOD:
1. Insulin resistance PCOS:
What insulin resistance means?
Insulin resistance is when cells in your muscles,
fat, and liver don't respond well to insulin and
can't easily take up glucose from your blood.
As a result, your pancreas makes more insulin
to help glucose enter your cells.
High insulin can impair ovulation and cause
the ovaries to make excess testosterone
According to the nutritionist, it occurs in 70 per cent of the cases. As cells become numb to the effect insulin, a condition called insulinoma arises which causes this type of PCOS. Abdominal weight gain, sugar cravings and fatigue are among its symptoms.
The key is down to improving your insulin sensitivity. You can work on this through:
* Regular exercise and movement throughout the day helps your body to burn sugar, lose fat and improve sensitivity to insulin.
* Avoiding high sugar foods and having a balanced carbohydrate diet that is also rich in protein and fat (good one)to balance blood sugar levels.
* Prioritizing sleep and reducing stress can also help to manage blood sugar and insulin levels.
* Supplementation of key nutrients such as magnesium, chromium
2. Adrenal PCOS (adrenal glands located on top of both kidneys)
This occurs during a massive stressful period. Marked indicators are high levels of cortisol and androgen (DHEA) DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is a hormone produced by your body's adrenal glands. These are glands just above your kidneys.
* Manage stress. Reducing stress levels through activities like , meditation, mindfulness and gratitude journaling will help to support your nervous system and your hormones.
* Get enough sleep each night. Make sure you’re getting at least 8 hours of sleep each night to support your stress levels and recovery.
* Avoid high intensity exercise. Limit excessive and high intensity training as this can further put a stress on your adrenals.
* Take nutrients that are rich in magnesium, vitamin B5 and vitamin C as they are important to support the adrenal glands and nervous system
3. Inflammatory PCOS
This type of PCOS occurs due to chronic inflammation. Poor diet and unhealthy lifestyle lead to increased androgen levels, which causes PCOS.
* Address gut health. Repairing leaky gut tissue, balancing gut bacteria, improving digestive enzymes and eliminating pathogenic bacteria are all important steps to reduce overall inflammation.
* Remove food triggers. Addressing potential food sensitivities and removal of inflammatory foods is a vital step to help address inflammation.
* Natural anti-inflammatories such as turmeric, omega 3 fatty acids as well as antioxidants
4. Post-pill PCOS
This occurs after stopping the intake of oral contraceptive pills. "The artificial Progesterone causes a party in the ovaries after you stop the pills", and this can cause PCOS. Taking the pills can stop the symptoms temporarily but can worsen the condition once stopped.
This type of PCOS is a temporary situation and reversible. Good sleep and low stress can help. Nutrients like magnesium, vitamin E, vitamin B6 and zinc are helpful.
COMPLICATION CAN ARISE FROM PCOD
Various metabolic syndromes, including high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, increased cholesterol and blood glucose levels.
Miscarriages
Infertility
Gestational diabetes
Sleep apnea
Type 2 Diabetes
Depression and other mental disorders
Endometrial cancer
Abnormal uterine bleeding
Untreatable acne, displaying hormonal problems
Chronic Liver inflammation
AVOID:
1. Medication for diabetes, contraceptive pills, Anti Androgen drugs
(they pacify the symptoms for a while and do not tap the root cause, they may have other side effects)
2. Using Plastic containers: like bottle, Tupperware, when plastic come in contact with the food, it leaches chemical like Xenoestrogens, which are similar to the hormone estrogen produced by the human body and completely messes up the hormone balance of the body. Instead switch to steal and glass containers
(Xenoestrogens are a type of xenohormone that imitates estrogen, Xenoestrogens are “foreign” estrogens, with potentially hazardous outcomes, decreased sperm viability, ovarian dysfunction, neurodevelopmental deficits and obesity. Sources of Xenoestrogens include plastics, pesticides, chemicals, and water systems.)
Where Are Xenoestrogens Found?
- Water (tap water and bathing)
- Pesticides, herbicides and insecticides, including glyphosate as found in conventional food, and even tampons.
- Cleaning products (home and industrial)
- Plastics (food, beverages, storage containers, non-food packaging and industrial plastics)
- Canned foods.
3. Non stick and aluminum cookware, instead use clay, bronze, iron pots.
4. Cosmetics, house cleaner solution, pesticides in fruits & vegetables which contains Xenoestrogen
5. Tea, coffee,
6. Reduce stress
7. Foods to avoid
Refined carbohydrates, such as mass-produced pastries and white bread.
Fried foods, such as fast food.
Sugary beverages, such as sodas and energy drinks, Sugary drinks
Processed meats, such as hot dogs, sausages, and luncheon meats, (cakes, candy, sweetened yogurt, ice creams with excess sugar)
Solid fats, including margarine, shortening (type of fat that is solid at room temperature) like butter, and lard, cheese.
WHAT TO FOLLOW:
1. Intermittent Fasting: (Check-Detox Your Body, Fasting)
2. Pesticides in fruits and vegetables: contains Endocrine Disruptor (interferes or elimination of natural hormones in the body that are responsible for development, behavior, fertility, and maintenance of homeostasis (normal cell metabolism). can be washed away by soaking them in salted water for 30 minutes, or charcoal solution, submerging your produce in a solution of one teaspoon of baking soda / turmeric and two cups of water for two minutes or more (the longer you soak, the more chemicals you get rid of). Rinse in tap water again before eating.
3. Eat less and move more
4. Eating right food- ditch processed food
5. Eat foods that are low in GI (glycemic index)
6. Limit carbohydrates & Low-fat, high-carbohydrate diets might increase insulin levels
7. Include probiotic foods (To know more read--- HOW TO HAVE GOOD FLORA IN GUT)
8. Sleep and wake up at regular time
9. Exercise: Be active. Exercise helps lower blood sugar levels.
10. Maintain a healthy weight: Weight loss can reduce insulin and androgen levels and may restore ovulation
Diet to Treat PCOD
1. To follow a diet with low fat and carbohydrate content (this would prevent any sudden upsurge in your blood sugar levels and help you keep a check on your weight)
2. Foods that may be included are
Natural, unprocessed food
Spinach, kale and other leafy vegetables
Foods high in fiber
Broccoli and cauliflower
Legumes
Whole grain unrefined grains
Seeds like flax seeds, chia seeds, hemp seeds,
Good fats like avocado, coconut, nuts
NATURAL MANAGEMENT FOR PCOD
Indian ginseng: It rectifies hormonal imbalance, strengthens the adrenal gland's functions, and stimulates blood flow. The stress-combatting superpowers of Indian ginseng (Ashwagandha) also improve fertility and regularise the menstrual cycles in women. It reduce stress hormones and stimulate blood flow to the female reproductive organs.
Holy basil:
Significantly improved anxiety, stress, depression has powerful anti-stress properties, It supports the adrenal system (Women who are pregnant should avoid holy basil, since it might cause the uterus to contract)
Ginger and Turmeric:
Ginger and turmeric are known emmenagogue (a substance that stimulates or increases menstrual flow).Regular inclusion of ginger in your diet can reduce onset of menstrual irregularities. You can have grated ginger with a tsp. of honey to induce periods.
When you face irregularities in periods, turmeric can stimulate blood flow in uterus and pelvic region. Turmeric has antispasmodic effect on the body, which expands uterus and induces menstruation.
Asparagus racemosus (root)/ Shatavari: (regulates period) help to balance the hormones and maintain the ovarian plexus. It averts the formation of new cysts and also prevents the remission of the disease. Apart from this, Shatavari holds a key role in maintaining the duration of the menstrual cycle (3-7 days), normalise the cycle and blood flow. It helps promote conception but also goes on to support a healthy pregnancy.
Tribulus terrestris (goats head plant), is used to restore female vitality, and reduce the physiologic effects of stress.
Bauhinia variegata: (All parts of the plant (leaves, flower buds, flower, stem, stem bark, seeds, and roots possess medicinal benefits). medicine used PCOS, ovarian cysts (control cysts), hormonal imbalance, to treat hypothyroidism, breast lump and various other diseases and joint pains
Have been recommended for the several gynecological disorders. The bark is said to work as a uterine tonic; helping with severe cramps, heavy bleeding, bloating, tiredness, and burning sensation during the menses. It also helps manage pelvic inflammatory diseases, including the inflammation in uterus and ovaries, because it is an anti-inflammatory agent. It helps in reducing problems associated with postmenopausal syndrome such as hot flashes. As it is capable of bringing back the balance between estrogen and progesterone, it is recommended for the management of poly cystic ovarian disease (PCOD).
Turmeric, Holy basil, Cinnamon tea for they improve your hormonal balance.
Fenugreek seed, Neem leaves, bitter guard control Insulin resistance
It Reduce the size of Ovary cysts and helps to regulate the length of menstrual cycle.
EXTERNAL APPLICATION :
Same as Endometriosis
