RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

 RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

The respiratory system includes the nose, mouth, throat, voice box, windpipe, and lungs.

The lungs and respiratory system allow us to breathe. They bring oxygen into our bodies (called inspiration, or inhalation) feeds oxygen to every cell in the body to survive and send carbon dioxide out (called expiration, or exhalation) from the blood.

This exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide is called respiration.

Air enters the respiratory system through the nose or the mouth. If it goes in the nostrils,  the air is warmed and humidified. Tiny hairs called cilia protect the nasal passageways and other parts of the respiratory tract, filtering out dust and other particles that enter the nose through the breathed air.

The two openings of the airway (the nasal cavity and the mouth) meet at the pharynx, or throat, at the back of the nose and mouth. The pharynx is part of the digestive system as well as the respiratory system because it carries both food and air.

At the bottom of the pharynx, this pathway divides in two, one for food — the esophagus, which leads to the stomach — and the other for air. The epiglottis, a small flap of tissue, covers the air-only passage when we swallow, keeping food and liquid from going into the lungs.

Pathway of Air

1. Nose/mouth

2 Pharynx

3. Larynx

4. Trachea

5. Bronchi

6. Bronchioles

7. Alveoli

Functions:

  • a. Breathing Inhalation and Exhalation ..
  • b. External Respiration Exchanges Gases Between the Lungs and the Bloodstream.
  • c. Internal Respiration Exchanges Gases Between the Bloodstream and Body Tissues.
  • d. Helps us to smell and create sound
  • e. Warms air to match your body temperature and moisturizes it to the humidity level your body needs.
  • f. Protects your airways from harmful substances and irritants.

How lungs can be damage:

Lungs can get into trouble when lungs build-up of toxins and tar in the lungs caused by environmental pollutants, mold, radon gas (gets into buildings through cracks in floors and walls, and around plumbing and electrical wire, basement house), allergens like pollen, dust,  certain foods, food additives, carpet, pesticides, fire work, fume chemicals, drug, flour (baker asthma), gas appliances, smoke, cockroaches waste, candles (using everyday) bird feathers, pet furs, sprays for bug car home hair, strong-smelling, chemical fume, such as coal mining, textiles, farming and cigarette smoke and

diseases such as asthma, COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) infections like influenza, pneumonia, tuberculosis, lungs cancer.

How Allergies Affect Your Lungs

Allergies can cause inflammation in your lungs, airways swell and produce extra mucus. Mucus normally protects your lungs by trapping bacteria, dust, and other particles before they can get in. Too much mucus makes it harder to breathe.

This inflammation can result in coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, nasal congestion and watery eyes,

Individuals with allergies are at higher risk of developing respiratory complaints

Food Types to Avoid if You Have Lung Disease

Dairy Products: As the body digests dairy products, a breakdown of milk digestion called casomorphin increases the amount of phlegm and mucus produced by the body. This can increase coughing, which can cause wheezing and pain in COPD patients

Process Meat: nitrites used in processing and preserving cured meats( Cured meat is meat that has been preserved through ageing, drying, canning, salting, brining or smoking), may cause inflammation and stress to the lungs.

Refined starches  (do not contain the bran and germ of the grain, and they have a lower nutritional value than whole-grain foods) and sodium have a 1.43 times higher risk of developing chronic respiratory symptoms and COPD.

Salty Foods: Sodium causes fluid retention, which can lead to shortness of breath in patients who have lung disease.

Soda:  soda contains carbon dioxide to make it carbonated, which can cause gas and bloating that makes it harder to breathe. In addition, the high sugar content can increase inflammation and lead to weight gain,

Fast Food: fast foods and processed foods increase the risk of asthma attacks, lung function decline, wheeze and breathlessness

Packed foods/junk foods: chocolate, candy, ice cream, cakes, sugary drinks, sugary dessert, low in fats, fried foods, white sugar, salt, refined foods like white flour, oil, white rice, bread, cheese, pasta, potato and yam, banana, curd, fish tends to form more mucus and decreases our immune system

Meat, legumes, cabbage, egg, build up gas in the abdomen, causing bloating and shortness of breath.

Foods that are helpful:

Honey and cinnamon, hot water. This powerful drink can help detoxify the body and fight off the effects of pollutants.

Ginger and turmeric drink. Apple, beetroot, carrot smoothie.

Including fibrous green leafy vegetables, white and red radish, turnips, leeks, ginger, Chameleon Plant (Tuningkok),spring onions and bitter gourd, onion, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, beet, pumpkin, unpolished millets, ferments such as idli, dosa and appam, nuts and seeds).

Pepper, ginger, basil, turmeric, jaggery are good immuno-stimulators for chronic diseases like asthma

Antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables such as aamla, blue berries, apple, papaya, guava, oranges, grapes

Take fruits diet for a few days, such as pineapple juice, grape juice, orange juice, baked apples,

A broth of thick potato peelings with few other vegetables is good.

THINGS TO REMEMBER:

Blow nose regularly, but do it very gently

Determine to cough slowly rather than vigorously

Flush your nose with salt water and gargle with it.(1/2 tsp. of salt in 1 glass of water)

If you really want to solve the chronic problem in the quickest and best way, go to bed for a couple days. Go on a fruit juice fast, herbs tea, take a few enemas, and by the third day you should be in perfect shape

Hot drinks help you cough out the phlegm. coughing is the only way the phlegm can come out

Extremely hot and cold foods should be avoided for they can trigger coughing,

When phlegm rises from the lungs into the throat, the body is likely trying to remove it. Spitting it out is healthier than swallowing it.

Drink lots of fluid, so the phlegm will be thinner and looser

Do not use milk, white flour products, sugar foods, and fat it produces a thick phlegm which complicates healing.

Outside in cold weather wear a scarf or mask over the mouth and nose to warm the air

Avoid chilling, do not walk bare foot on cold floors

Use a vaporizer with few drops of eucalyptus or humidifier at night, this will keep the air moist.

Avoid sudden temperature changes

Reduce amount of stress and fatigue

Stop smoking

Maintain ideal body weight. The thinner you are , the less flesh your lungs have to supply oxygen to. Obesity and constipation decrease the patients resistance to respiratory infection.

Wear loose clothing, this helps you breathe better

Do not wear belts the abdomen should be free to breathe and cough properly

Shortness of breath (dyspnea): COPD (Vitamin C & E), Pneumonia (Zinc), Asthma & tuberculosis (Vitamin D), Anemia,

Shortness of breath might be due to decrease B1, pH Acidosis & alkalosis, low calcium

Asthma is 80% are cause of allergies, must mostly deal with allergens and identify it

Avoid steroids and antibiotics: they are useless if this is a viral sickness.

Do not use cough medicines, for they tend to thicken the secretions and make it still harder to expel

Avoid nasal decongestants, nose drops etc. In long run, they will cause you more trouble than they are worth.

The use of antibiotics for minor infections, such as colds can produce strong bacteria in the bronchioles which can later leads pneumonia

Detoxify the lungs:
The lungs are one of the most important organs in the body, and we don't realize how quickly the lungs can become polluted with toxins from our diets and lifestyle.

What enters our lungs ends up in the bloodstream, so it's important to keep in mind that our lungs need to be free of toxins to stay healthy.

There are some simple, natural ways, you can do to detoxify the lungs and increase lung capacity, reduce the risk of lung cancer, and improve the overall health of the airways.

1. Breathing exercises
Intentional deep breathing can help keep the lungs free from toxins because it increases blood flow to the lungs. It is recommended that you include exercises that involve holding the breath and releasing it in one long, strong exhale. your lungs will develop an increased capacity to filter pure oxygen for the muscles (oxygen-deprived muscles through intense exercise).

2. Water
Drinking water is good for almost every aspect of health, including improving lung health! You can't go wrong with drinking water regularly - drinking a minimum of 8-10 glasses a day will keep you hydrated and your lungs will work better to ventilate your blood. Keeping the lungs hydrated can help clear mucus and fight bacterial infections.

3. Hydrotherapy:
Take a full hot bath, followed by a short cold shower or brief towel rub.
Give hot fomentation to the chest and spine finishing with cold.
Hot foot baths with a tbsp. of mustard in water. will pull the blood away from the chest reduce congestion.
Apply heat compress on chest and back at night/before bedtime. this will help relieve congestion and aid in sleep

4. Lemon and cucumber detox water:
* 1 pitcher of water,
* 6 to 10 slices of sliced cucumber,
* Slices of half a lemon,
* A small handful of mint leaves. put all the ingredient in water overnight to let the flavors diffuse. or make as manna drink (grind them all and have them every morning)

5. Lemon, ginger and peppermint
Lemon water is one of the most common natural cleansers, detoxifying the body by acting as a diuretic, additionally containing antioxidants. Drink lemon water first thing in the morning for a cleansing boost right from the start of your day. Ginger and peppermint work the same by decongesting the airways and removing toxins from the lungs.
Peppermint and ginger tea before bed will do the trick, or else opt for chewing 3 to 5 peppermint leaves to fight lung infections.

6. Grape juice cleaning
Drinking fresh grape juice once a day for a week will help cleanse the lungs of toxin build-up. The skin of grapes has a high antioxidant power that helps limit inflammation in the lungs, which may help reduce the severity of asthma and the risk of lung cancer.

7. Take a hot shower/steam inhale with Eucalyptus
Inhaling the hot steam can help rid your lungs of toxins. Eucalyptus is a powerful antiseptic and antioxidant that can help eliminate the risk of coughs and colds as well as strengthen the respiratory system.

8. Natural cleaning products
Many household cleaning products contain toxins that we don't know about. Products like air fresheners, bleach, furniture and floor polishes, and aerosols can contain toxic substances that can contribute to asthma and other respiratory problems.  Also, when cleaning, be sure to leave the room or area ventilated by keeping windows and doors open to allow circulation and ventilation.

9. Stop smoking
If you smoke, it's time to quit and take back control of your lung health. Cigarettes contain tar which is a carcinogen. It can infect the lungs and increase colds, coughs and wheezing. Smoking causes 84% of lung cancer deaths.

10. Avoid foods that are not good for lungs
Foods such as dairy products, meat, can cause mucus to build up in the lungs because they are harder to digest. Instead, focus on foods high in fiber and antioxidants to cleanse your body and help it digest your food.

WHY WATER IS IMPORTANT FOR LUNGS:

High water intake for healthy lungs, human beings require 10,000 litres of air every 24 hours to survive. “When we breathe in air through the nose for it to reach the alveoli (the tiny air sacs in the lungs), the passageway needs to be 100% saturated with water. Those with asthma suffer from dry lungs and always need moist air for air passages to function without hindrance. Otherwise dry air can be an irritant and trigger not only a dry cough but also dry skin,” Asthma and eczema are related and in severe cases, if you suppress one, the other manifests.

NATURAL REMEDIES FOR RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS:

1. Tulsi: Tulsi leaves are useful from regular fever to some of the deadliest and most fatal bacterial and viral infections, drink made by boiling Tulsi leaves and black pepper helps in building immunity, anti bacterial elements and facilitates recovery from Dengue. ABOUT  EUCALPYTUS

Eucalyptus has a very powerful action deep in the body. Eucalyptus is an effective antiviral, antibiotic and antifungal at the same time, to fight all harmful viruses, bacteria, fungi and germs. It acts on all immune defenses, increasing the production of healthy and resistant white blood cells, including T lymphocytes, which are killer cells that are very important in the body's immune response.

Eucalyptus has a very effective purifying effect on the air, being used for centuries during times of great epidemics to disinfect places affected by plague, rabies, leprosy and diseases of the Middle Ages. Eucalyptus was then burned in the homes of the sick and in the streets to disinfect the air thoroughly.

Eucalyptus purifies the lungs and pulmonary alveoli in depth.  It fights very effectively bronchitis, laryngitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, and significant pulmonary congestion. It helps to regain a deep breath in and out for all people with respiratory disorders, whether it is related to asthma, pollution, tobacco, allergies, dust mites or dust. It cleanses all the lungs in depth, it re-oxygenates all the cells of the body, and it allows better functioning of the pulmonary alveoli, which are then purified of their toxins.

Eucalyptus is an ally of choice for combating winter diseases. Ideal in times of extreme cold, for prevention or at the start of epidemics, it helps to better cope with influenza, red and white tonsillitis, bronchitis, laryngitis, pharyngitis, colds, pneumonia and pharyngitis. This while boosting the immune defenses for a well protected organism.
Eucalyptus soothes fatty coughs and thins dry coughs, helping to flush out toxins. It decreases sore throats, runny noses, fevers and tonsillitis. It participates in the purification of the entire upper sphere like lungs, congested nose, throat, head.

Take a handful of Eucalyptus leaves and boils in a cup of 200 ml water for 10 minutes. Then cool it to obtain effective dose of active substance. Then drink the tea 2 times a day.

ASTHMA:

Asthma is a condition in which your airways narrow and swell and may produce extra mucus. This can make breathing difficult and trigger coughing, a whistling sound (wheezing) when you breathe out and shortness of breath.

Symptoms

Shortness of breath: have more trouble exhaling than inhaling because the air passages of the small bronchi become clogged and constricted with mucus, thus making it difficult for the patient to breath out, more difficulty at night especially during sleep.
Chest tightness or pain
Wheezing when exhaling, which is a common sign of asthma in children
Trouble sleeping caused by shortness of breath, coughing or wheezing
Coughing or wheezing attacks that are worsened by a respiratory virus, such as a cold or the flu

Asthma triggers

Asthma is 80% are cause of allergies, must mostly deal with allergens and identify it

  • Airborne allergens, such as pollen, dust mites, mold spores, pet dander or particles of cockroach waste
  • Respiratory infections, such as the common cold
  • Physical activity
  • Cold air
  • Air pollutants and irritants, such as smoke
  • Certain medications, including beta blockers, aspirin, and non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen and naproxen sodium
  • Strong emotions and stress
  • Sulfites and preservatives added to some types of foods and beverages, including shrimp, dried fruit, processed potatoes, beer and wine
  • Gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD), a condition in which stomach acids back up into your throat
  • The patient should avoid dusty places, exposure to cold, foods to which he is sensitive, mental worries and tensions.
  • Foods which tend to produce phlegm such as rice, sugar, curds, fried etc
 Antibiotics can lead to asthma

Is the explosive rise in asthma and allergies being seen especially in children partially related to antibiotic use? Epidemiologic studies have found strong connections between antibiotic treatment and the later development of asthma and allergies.

Antibiotic administration in the first year of life and throughout lifetime is significantly associated with developing asthma and allergic rhinitis.

Antibiotics kill both the disease-causing bacteria and the good bacteria which can throw off the delicate balance that exists in the gut. If this antibiotic triggered imbalance occurs during infancy, when the immune system is developing, it may encourage the later development of asthma and other allergic conditions.

Anaphylactic reactions due to antibiotics may include: Shortness of breath. Wheezing

Asthma cannot be treated with antibiotics because the inflammation in your airways isn't caused by bacteria.

All commercially produced antibiotics are made by bacteria, fungi,

Molds are a microscopic type of fungi

Treatment:

HONEY: Honey is highly beneficial in the treatment of asthma. Take a jug of honey held under the nose of an asthma patient and inhale the air, he starts breathing easier and deeper, the effect lasts for about an hour or so. because the honey contains a mixture of higher alcohols and ethereal oils and the vapours given off by them are soothing and beneficial.
Internally taken, it thins out the accumulated mucous and helps its elimination from the respiratory passages. Honey should be 1 year old.
GARLIC: Decoction of garlic should be given
TURMERIC: An effective remedy for bronchial asthma given 1 tsp. twice-thrice a day, best taken during empty stomach.
MUSTARD OIL: During the attack mustard oil mixed with little camphor should be massaged over the back of the chest. This will loosen up phlegm and ease breathing, The patient should inhale steam from the boiling water with caraway seeds known as ajwain. It will dilate the bronchial passage
EIGHT HEALTH LAWS: Follow the eight health laws too.
Follow other natural treatments: see above

PULSE TEST, HOW TO DO THEM

Is done to identify specific food allergens.
First take your pulse for 1 minute before you eat anything, so that is your basal pulse rate.
Then eat a single food (that you doubt for allergen), and check your pulse rate after 15 minutes, then after 30 min. then after 60 min.
Place your right fingers on the carotid artery in the neck easier than the wrist pulse.
Have a stop watch and to check your beats for one full  minute.
If it beats more than 10 faster per min than your basal beats, that indicates that you are allergic to that food.

If  you take, can start with egg, meat, fish, oysters, milk including all diary products, chocolate, soy, legumes, tomatoes, grain like wheat, oats, white rice, corn, peanut, fruits like citrus, strawberries, banana, coffee, white sugar, fried foods, salt, tobacco, refine and processed foods
